Rath Yatra

Rath Yatra ,  the chariot festival is the most significant celebrations of Shree Jagannath- the Lord of the Universe. The  Lord Jagannath with his elder  brother Balabhadra and  sister Subhadra , leave the sanctum of the temple once in a year to travel to their  Mausi ( Shree Gundicha temple )  in  three different Rath ( Chariots )   giving  darshan to devotees irrespective their caste, creed and religion. The chariot of Lord Jagannath is known as Nandi Ghosha or Garudadwaja  and  is wrapped in Red and Yellow  clothes, the chariot of Balabhadra is Taladwaja   and is  wrapped in Red and Bluish green cloth and the chariot of Subhadra is Padmadwaja or Dwarpadalana (trumpler of pride)  is wrapped in Red and Black cloth .All the  chariots  consist nine Parsva Devatas each. The grand Rath Yatra is celebrated on Second day (Dwitiya) of Suklapakshya bright fortnight of Ashada masa (3rd month in Lunar calendar) of the year.

Rath Yatra the greatest  festival of the Supreme divinity who has manifested in Kaliyuga to emancipate humanity and to relieve them from their suffering and to  redeem the fallen and wipes out all the sins of devotees. Even ,  the touch of the ropes of the chariot are enough to confer the results of the several pious deeds or penance for ages. It is said “Rathe tu vamanam drishtavapurarjanamam na vidyate.” The glimpse of the  divine  Shree Jagannath  , Shree Balabhadra and  mata Subhadra  frees  the devotees from cycle of birth and rebirth (Mokshya) .In  Puri, lakhs of devotees pull the chariot with utmost devotion and experience the divine. After nine days of their  stay  at Gundicha temple , the Lord returns  back to the Temple , as a part of the festival known as  “Bahuda yatra“.

 

The Rath  Yatra  is celebrated with  devotion and serenity in the temple campus. Thousands of devotees from Pondicherry and adjoining   area  participate  and celebrate the Rath Yatra festival  by pulling their chariots , on both the days of Gundicha and Bahuda .
